Jeda SSD Review: Featuring a sleek design, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are two of the first cars that don't rely on an internal combustion engine. Instead, these two electric vehicles use powerful batteries that recharges quickly, but what about the storage space for dashcam and Sentry Mode clips?
If you want to know if JEDA’s new SSD for the Tesla Model 3 or Model Y is right for you, then you need to read this article.
I was so excited to learn a couple months ago that Jeda Products, Inc. was working on something new to expand their product line. I thought to myself that maybe it would be a different type of Tesla product but I was in for a surprise. You can now get the JEDA SSD product for your Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

JEDA's new SSD for the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y is impressive. It works by storing your TeslaCam SSD footage on a removable drive that you can carry with you, or keep in your car. Unlike traditional dashcams, footage can be viewed via the touchscreen on the center console.
Made exclusively for your Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, their solid state drives improves read and write speeds when compared to general usage flash drives. All products are rigorously tested before leaving the factory.
No more cumbersome connectors and cables; the Jeda SSD connector has a quick connect and quick release mechanism.
Say hello to the Jeda SSD, the only high-speed SSD that connects to your Model 3 or Model Y USB Hub using embedded magnets.
Connecting your Jeda SSD into the USB Hub is as easy as 1-2-3. Just slide the SSD into the enclosure and the magnetic cable will automatically connect and you're good to go
Format your large USB drives by using FAT32 format
With the FAT32 Format, you can format your USB drive larger than 32GB with the FAT32 filesystem.
- Herunterladen FAT32 format by clicking on the screenshot on the page.
- Select the drive from the dropdown menu and click ‘START'.
- This will quickly format your Jeda SSD to FAT32 for use in your car.
Always triple check the drive letter so you don't accidently format the wrong storage device!
You should be able to use the Jeda SSD in your USB Hub now. Make sure you have an option to format the SSD under Safety & Security (scroll down to Sentry Mode section). If FORMAT USB DRIVE is grayed out, make sure you have a solid USB connection. You may need to slide the SSD out, attach the USB-A side first and re-connect the SSD.
The Tesla SSD shares the same die cast magnesium shell as the center screen in your Tesla, which dissipates heat and protects your SSD. The accompanying USB cable is custom-made of braided nylon and aluminum, with embedded magnets. It feels extra premium to the touch.
It feels solid in my hands, strong and light-weight.
I connected the Jeda SSD to the fastest USB port on my AMD PC and it came up as: 系统
It came pre-formatted for exFAT for use in the car, which I ended up having to format to FAT32 (by using Windows 10 PowerShell) for it to work properly in the car.
Per Google Translate, this means “system” when converted to English.
Properties, lists this device as a JMicron Tech SCSI Disk Device.
I wanted to run CrystalDiskMark on the drive and I was able to. I was only able to get the speeds pictured below with USB 3.2. I tried two different machines for these read/write tests.
|Lesen (MB/s)||Write (MBs/)|
I decided to try re-formatting the SSD to NTFS (instead of exFAT) for the filesystem and attempted this test again. Essentially the same results.
I dug into my BIOS settings for my desktop to learn that the PC builder shipped it with beta ASUS BIOS driver, Version 3202. I updated to release 3405 and re-ran the CrystalDiskMark. Same results.
|Lesen (MB/s)||Write (MBs/)|
I tried an external hard drive and was able to read 99.57MB/s and write 46.47MB/s without any problems. I got another Jeda SSD to test and tried the same speedtest and came to the same conclusion about read / write speeds. This product is designed to meet and exceed the requirements of Tesla, Inc. for use in its Model 3 and Model Y models.
It's recommend a minimum of 20MB/s write speed, and preferably in the 40MB/s range, so this shouldn't be a problem for this application.
What is TeslaCam?
Tesla's TeslaCam simultaneously records from all four angles to provide an optimal unobstructed view of its surroundings. A simple tap of the DashCam icon on the touch screen saves the last 10 minutes of footage so it doesn't get overwritten on the Jeda SSD.
Owners of Tesla electric cars have been using the Tesla car cam system to capture gnarly accidents, prove insurance fraud, and identify hit and run suspects on the road.
What is Sentry Mode?
Tesla Sentry Mode: What is it? The newly released firmware update of 2019 for Tesla vehicles includes a new Sentry mode, which is a self-defense system designed for those who park their Tesla outside.
In addition to recording video footage, this feature uses vehicle sensors to potential threats. Even if someone leans against your car, a “record” message will flash on the car's screen, notifying you over the phone and saving the footage.
The Sentry Mode can be activated using the car’s app or from inside the car. It can also be limited to certain locations. When the vehicle is set to Sentry Mode, the car will act as a personal security system, constantly monitoring the area for any potential disturbances or vandalism.
The Tesla SSD is the elegant solution for those who want to accelerate and expand their Tesla storage in conjunction with the Jeda USB Hub (review). I appreciate the engineering that has been incorporated into this product and how easily it fits together.
After a test of two units of the Jeda SSD I found that the SSD reached the same speed of about 44MB/s, both when reading and writing to the solid state drive. This is fast enough per Tesla requirements for Sentry Mode and Dash Cam footage.
This product comes with a total capacity of 256GB, and it is highly unlikely that you will run out of storage anytime soon.
Designed with a 256GB total capacity, this product by Jeda is suitable for Tesla owners. Its magnetic design makes it easy to install into its USB Hub, and the metal design of the device helps keep internal temperatures down by dissipating the heat from the SSD.
