Jeda USB Hub vs TAPTES USB Hub for Tesla Model 3

I will discuss the differences between these two USB hubs created by two different popular Tesla accessory brands: Jeda and TAPTES.

Which one should you buy: Jeda USB Hub vs TAPTES USB Hub? I will cover both brands: Model 3 and Model Y editions, car compatibility, quality differences and the different characteristics between their product offerings.

When the Tesla Model 3 was first released, the two USB ports in the front of the car were only really used for charging phones directly or with wireless charging pads so two was enough but since then we have gotten far more features which now include: USB audio, Tesla Cam, Sentry Mode, and Tesla Arcade. It’s time to consider an upgrade!

TAPTES vs Jeda

Both brands of USB hubs are split into two different versions:

Both USB hubs feature Snug fit and Tesla factory-installed feel builds.

The TAPTES USB Hub has a total of four front USB ports (three USB-A and one USB-C), while the Jeda USB Hub also has four, but there are two USB-A and two USB-C. This is one of the main differences I have examined between these two different Tesla products. I will go into more detail later in this article on the actual USABLE amount of USB ports.

Both feature similar designs that allow you to hide an SSD or other tiny storage device to store your dashcam and / or Sentry mode recordings.

As of this writing, there isn’t a way to view the recorded footage through the infotainment screen however it seems this is about to change soon as a reported Tweet reports it’s coming! We are getting a Dashcam Viewer in a future update! It appears to display the front image with the side and back cameras being shown in the corner of the display.

Update: With the latest software, it is now possible to view the dashcam footage from the infotainment screen, as well as see when the event took place and the ability to delete your false positive clips.

Jeda has expanded its product to the new Model 3 + Model Y. It has a total of 6 USB ports: two front USB-A ports for video game controllers, wireless charging, audio, etc., two Type C ports and an additional USB-A port hidden in the hub, while the TAPTES have a total of 5 USB ports. I will go into more detail later in this article on the actual USABLE amount of USB ports.

3. TAPTES vs Jeda: Quality

Although both products seem to be identical, the external appearance between these brands is very similar however the internals are very different between these brands. I have found reports of users of the TAPTES hub having problems with slow data rates, USB port failures, and problems with the dashcam functionality of the Model 3 or Model Y. It is a very basic splitter with no power delivery and no kind of electronics to prevent power from overloading the unit or your USB ports.

Let me try to explain this in another way. So, TAPTES takes one USB port and converts it into two USB port. But, only one of these additional ports is data capable. So this is what you end up with:

One USB Port => 1x Data Only Port & 1x Power Only Port

Why is this a problem? Well first, you are limited to how you can use each port of the TAPTES and second, you can not use the USB Type-C port and the internal USB port at the same time.

I recommend the Jeda product due to this problem and it is the original USB hub for the Tesla Model 3 & Y. Their USB hub is a true hub which means each USB port is capable of data and/or power. You are now able to fully utilize all of the ports at the same time if need be. You can easily plug in two controllers for use in the Tesla Arcade and not have to unplug your Sentry Mode storage device.

You have spent $35-60K + on your Tesla Model 3 OR Model Y, why not invest in an equally high quality built USB hub instead of a USB splitter?

It is simply not worth taking the risk of damaging your car to save a bit of money. Jeda also copies over 1000 hours of Sentry Mode footage to ensure that your product is stable and works flawlessly in your Model 3. If something should happen on your way to work, you can relax and know that your footage is stored properly on your durable USB drive.

4. Jeda USB Hub v3 Notes

I wanted to include this additional information in regarding the Jeda Hub as far as how things are wired together so you are aware. Read on to learn more about the design of the latest revision of the Jeda Hub (v3).

The Jeda Hub now has two different hubs (instead of one and pass-through), and both internal hubs are connected to the Tesla Model 3’s USB ports, and have significantly improved performance and data speed on all hub ports.

This user also notes the Jeda spacer (included with Wireless Pad) still allows a docking option for the wireless pad compared to the TAPTES which will not support a phone like the Note 10+ with a thick case, so if you have a larger phone you are better off with the Jeda and the included spacer configuration.

I appreciate the Jeda Hub not only as a way to protect the factory USB ports, but also the massive expansion of the USB ports from TWO USB-A (factory) TO THREE USB-A + TWO USB-C ports so we can connect both phones while having additional ports for game controllers if we want to play some Cuphead on the Infotainment screen.

5. Final Thoughts

Jeda wins when it comes to the flexibility of being able to use all of your USB ports. This is due to being a real proper USB hub which handles and shares the USB port delivery to all of the added ports.

If you do decide to go with the TAPTES USB Hub, be sure to cover up the USB-C port on the front of the hub if you plan on using the internal USB port because otherwise you risk overloading that USB port in your car. So it turns out the TAPTES USB Hub is actually a 4-port splitter.

The combination of USB port types is going to come down to the devices you own. In our use case, USB-C works perfectly with the Google Pixel 3 XL and my co-pilots Google Pixel 5 and we are still left with two USB-A ports for our Xbox Controllers and I don’t have to mess with the Sentry Mode storage drive. 🙂 A nice upgrade from here would be to add a wireless charging pad. End up with a clean, convenient, and reliable charging set up in your Tesla by combining these products.

I hope this helps with your decision. Continue scrolling for coupon codes and links.
