I shared my aerial & landscape photography with a number of art shows last year around South Central Wisconsin and I wanted to share the most common frequently asked questions drone questions!

How long can you fly your drone?

Top Recommendation: DJI Mavic 2 Pro

The Mavic 2 has a maximum flight time of 31 minutes with no wind and at a consistent 15.5 mph (25 km/h) speed for both the Pro and Zoom version.

The Phantom 4 Pro has a maximum flight time of 30 minutes with no wind and at a consisent 15.5 mph (25km/h) speed.

The Mavic Mini also has a maxium flight time of 30 minutes with no wind and at a consisent 15.5 mph (25km/h) speed.

How high can you fly a drone?

If you are flying a drone in the United States you are legally allowed to fly up to 400 feet or 121.92 Meters, while in Euro Union, that limit is raised to 500 feet or 152.4 Meters. In the United States, you are allowed to fly 400 feet above a structure or building if you’re capturing it however your flight app may not allow you due to distance from the nearest airport.

Standard regulations mention that your drone must remain clear of any surrounding obstacles; trees and buildings fall into this category.

In terms of the technical limitations of flying a drone at high altitudes, it has been shown on YouTube before that they are capable of flying extremely altitudes but this is very dangerous.

How far away can you fly your drone?

The Mavic 2 can be flown up to 5 miles or 8 km away from the pilot.

The Phantom 4 Pro has a rated range of 4.3 mi (7 km) with complete line of fight of the aircraft and free of interference.

The Mavic Mini can be flown up to 2.5 miles or 4 km away from the pilot. This is quite impressive for such a small and light FlyCam as they call it.

It it is recommended that you always have line of sight of your drone at all times or hire a visual observor (VO) for your flight. This optional crew member would monitor the flight mission and act as a second set of eyes. Also note any obstacles can reduce your signal or other WiFI connections can interfer with the signal between your UAV and remote controller.

How fast can you fly a drone?

Mavic 2 – Both Pro & Zoom can reach speeds up to 44.7 mph OR (72 km/h).
Phantom 4 Pro – P4P can travel up to 45 mph OR (72 kph).
Mavic Mini – MM can travel up to 29 mph OR (46.8 km/h).

Note: Wind needs to be not present to reach these rated speeds and S-Mode (Sports) must be activated in order to unlock the pep.

The battery gets emptied much faster by using Sport Mode.

How windy is too windy to fly a drone?

I highly recommend you check out UAV Forecast by Matthew Lloyd on his website. Enter your location, the planned maximum altitude for your flight (100-400 feet) and click search. Also available for iOS or Android devices.
