DJI Mini 2 vs Mavic Air 2: Which Follow-up Drone Should You Buy?

Today I will be comparing the DJI Mini 2 vs Mavic Air 2. Now that we have a Mini 2 which can not only take RAW photographs but 4K video as well in a more affordable package which makes this an exciting opportunity. Many will be asking. Should I get the DJI Mini 2 or spend the extra $350 USD for the Mavic Air 2? So, let's take a look at the differences and hopefully this will help you make that decision.

Let's start by getting a couple of things out in the open to avoid comments below with people saying my drone is better than yours etc. These are two completely different drones for different people and the DJI Mavic Air 2 is almost twice the price of the DJI Mavic Mini. I will share prices below in a table, so you can see it's not a fair comparison.

I don't know what your goals are from a drone. I don't know much money you want to spend or if you already own a drone. So, it's hard for me to tell you what the right drone is for you personally. I will do my best to provide you with the facts that I think are important to make such a choice between these two capable DJI Drones.

Let's not get all bent out of shape about this if you own either of these drones, you are a very fortunate person so enjoy it and get busy learning the ropes of flying your new aircraft. Don't worry so much about the technology or specifications.

First, let's take a look at the physical specifications, obviously, the big headline surrounding the Mini 2 is that it only weighs 249 grams which is a little over 1/2 a pound. This might be of importance to you. This means in many countries, the USA for example, it isn't required to register your aircraft but look at this as a small convenience. You will still need to follow the rules of your respective government or airspace authority.

The Mini 2 has the same rather large controller as the Mavic Air 2 so you are not saving weight when you take that into account plus you will likely want to add additional batteries from the get-go with the Fly More Kit or once you get more comfortable flying your drone if you are just starting out.

If you are a seasoned or professional drone pilot you might know that you will want additional batteries and propellers and it would make a lot of practical sense to go ahead and purchase the Fly More edition of whichever drone works best for your needs.

If you do go with the Fly More bundle you are looking at the exact same carrying case that comes with the Mavic Air 2 Fly More bundle. Due to this, I wouldn't worry so much about the weight of the DJI Mini 2 because as you complete your kit the weight won't matter as much once you add spare batteries, charging hub, filters, lighting kit, etc… Granted the Mini 2 is smaller than the Mavic Air 2.

Keep in mind weight isn't everything. The extra weight will help the drone fly through windy conditions.

On paper, there are a lot of similarities between these two drones such as the flight time. The Mavic Air 2 bests the Mini 2 by only 3-minutes of flight time (31-minutes vs 34-minutes). This may be insignificant to some pilots but it could add up if you need to scout out an area for a prolonged period of time or want to squeeze a little more footage out. You would be looking at an additional 12-minutes of flight time if you were to go on four drone flights. It could also mean the difference between having to land during the sun setting or getting those last beautiful golden moments.

Both drones include Ocusync 2.0 which allows you to fly up to 10km away.

Both support 12MP RAW photos.

Both support 4K/UHD video however the Mavic Air 2 supports 4K at 60 frames per second, whereas the Mini 2 supports up to 30 frames per second for 4K/UHD. This is important if you are interested in slowing down your recorded footage.

Let's dive a little deeper and learn why you would want to spend the extra money on the Mavic Air 2. The Mavic Air 2 has front and back-facing obstacle avoidance sensors which are very valuable if they stop you from crashing and therefore could save you a bit of money replacing or repairing your drone. It can be very exciting to fly a drone for the first time and risk getting carried away. The Mini 2 on the other hand does not have these sensors and will not detect or stop for nearby obstacles. If you were to crash, you might have wished you had spent the difference on the Mavic Air 2 unless you bought DJI Care Refresh and were able to recover the aircraft body as that is a requirement by DJI for its replacement plans.

35.8 mph vs 42.5 mph

Next, the Mavic Air 2 has more powerful motors and is a faster drone compared to the Mini 2. This helps the drone better handle windy conditions and aids in creating buttery cinematic actions regardless of what the wind is doing at that present moment.

The Mini 2 has made great strides compared to the original, Mavic Mini but that being said the Mavic Air 2 is still a much more steady flight experience and in my opinion, this is very important.

On-Board Storage
Mini 2 vs Mavic Air 2

The Mavic Air 2 has 8GB of internal storage, whereas the Mini has no internal storage. This can really come in handy if you happen to forget to load your drone with a MicroSD memory card and only need a small amount of video or photos. It's also just more convenient to download your content from the MicroSD instead of the internal storage which requires you to have a charged battery in your aircraft plus connecting it up with a USB cable. I actually did write-ups for both of these drones which can be found at these links:

I go over which cards DJI recommends you purchase for your drone along with some other cards you could consider and finally, some higher-end cards if transferring your files to your computer fast is of utmost importance to your workflow.

Both of these drones have Quick Shots which I have found to be extremely useful in creating cinematic-like shots especially when you are doing the action or activity in the scene. Unfortunately, the Mavic 2 does not include intelligent flight modes so we are without Active Track: Spotlight, which is one of my favorite flight modes, and for that reason, it would be hard for me to not pay the extra for this capability.

The Mavic Air 2 can shoot 48-megapixel RAW photos which could come in handy when it comes to cropping into your photographs. I find this functionality very useful when it comes to having limited time. Shoot a 48-megapixel photo and then use the individual RAW photos for the scene instead of using it all at once. It's a fast way to take a bunch of shots of the location without much work at all.

As far as the video performance of these two drones, the camera specifications are roughly the same. We have a fixed aperture of F/2.8. We have a fixed focal length equivalent of 24mm and a fixed focusing system. We do see a slightly larger sensor in the Mavic Air 2. It's a 1/2-inch CMOS sensor vs the Mini 2 with a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor. So, Mavic Air 2 is going to easily take better photos in low light conditions.

If we take a look at the 1080p frame rates, they go all the way up to 240 frames per second on the Mavic Air 2. This is a huge jump from the Mini 2 going up to 60 frames per second for this resolution.

If you are a filmmaker you will appreciate that the Mavic Air 2 includes two color profiles: Normal or D-cinelike, if you would like to perform your own color grading to your clips. While the Mini 2 only has Normal for color profiles it does provide a quite flat color grade by default and can be further enhanced in post-processing. The Mavic Air 2 supports HDR video which helps in high-contrast situations.

We are seeing the H.265 video codec on the Mavic Air 2 which means smaller video file sizes. It also has a 120Mb/s bit rate vs 100Mb/s bitrate which most other drones have, including the Mini 2. I wouldn't concern myself too much with these specs unless you are really trying to squeeze every little bit of quality out of your clips as there shouldn't be a massive difference here. Both drones should create clear crisp quality content that is perfect for sharing with your family or YouTube channel. Neither drone gets you the more high-end 10-bit d-log picture profile that DJI includes on its Mavic 2 Pro.

So, in conclusion which of these drones is the best? Like I said in the beginning of this article. I don't know what your goals are from a drone. I don't know much money you want to spend or if you already own a drone.

I am considering this drone myself to teach my friends and family how to fly a drone and not have to worry so much if something were to go wrong. At $449 / £419 / AU$749, this drone is completely legendary for everything you are getting in such a small aircraft.

If you are worried about crashing it because of the lack of obstacle avoidance, I recommend adding DJI Care Refresh, and just be sure to retrieve the drone from the tree or swamp so you can get back to flying!

Do you need 4K (at 60 frame per second)?

Go with the Mavic Air 2.

Do you need a drone that weighs less than 250 grams?

Go with the Mini 2.

Do you need Intelligent Flight Modes like FocusTrack?

Go with the Mavic Air 2.

Do you have a maximum budget of $449 / £419 / AU$749?
