Charging Ahead: My Visit to the Milwaukee Street Supercharger

After reviewing my photos from the new Tesla Supercharger on Milwaukee Street in Madison, WI, I noticed that each electrical cabinet is labeled "480 VOLTS." I was hoping to see 800V architecture, especially since the Tesla Cybertruck is capable of supercharging at up to 325kW on select V4 Supercharger stations.

Not to mention, faster charging speeds like this could significantly enhance the EV charging experience. Having a peak charging rate of 325kW would be incredibly impressive and could change the way people think about EV charging.

Update: After publishing this post, I came across an article by NotebookCheck that mentions Tesla's new 325 kW Superchargers only charge the Cybertruck about 90 seconds faster than previous models. While the increased charging speeds are impressive, it’s important to note that the time savings may be minimal until Tesla optimizes the charging curve for the 4680 battery.

Per Tesla's website: What is V4 Supercharging?

"We opened our first V4 Supercharger location in Harderwijk, the Netherlands in March 2023 and we will continue to open more V4 sites. All V4 Superchargers are equipped with a longer cable, providing easy access for all EVs. V4 currently supports peak rates of up to 250kW per vehicle and allows for updates and new features."

The new Supercharger on Milwaukee Street features Tesla's Magic Dock, which was first introduced at the Johnson Creek, WI Supercharger. It's great to see another Supercharger location in Wisconsin offering this functionality. I mention Johnson Creek because it seems to be the only other site in Wisconsin with this capability. During my visit, I also noticed another brand of electric vehicle charging at the new Supercharger, which I think is great to see.

I thought it was cool that when you arrive at the Superchargers, they now let you know you can earn points on the leaderboard for the racing game, even if you’re not charging. I was charging at the time, but you can actually park nearby if you want to try to achieve a top racing time for the specific Supercharger you're at.
